Among the earliest blooming trees, often flowering in late winter. Flaky-scaly, grayish-brown trunk bark with alternating dark and white layers in cross section. Leaves smooth to slightly scabrous (rough) above with asymmetrical bases. Bent terminal bud. Fluted trunk on wetter sites.
