Furrowed, gray trunk bark, the outer bark layers entirely reddish-brown in cross section. Slippery inner bark. Reddish-brown heartwood. Leaves scabrous (rough) with asymmetrical bases. Bent terminal bud. Winter buds covered by reddish, silky hairs.
