White Ash

Scientific Name:   Fraxinus americana

Stalked leaflets with whitened undersides and U-shaped leaf scars notched (bud notch) at the top. Green Ash leaflets, in contrast, have short stalks, lack whitened undersides, and have leaf scars flattened at the top. MADBUCK (Maple, Ash, Dogwood, and Buckeye) mnemonic useful for remembering Ohio's four native trees with opposite leaves/branching. Dioecious (male and female flowers on separate plants).
