Leaves emerge earlier than most native species, often in late winter. Leaves compound, 7-9 leaflets, the bases having fringed, comb-like stipules. Round stems heavily armed with stout, curved thorns. Multiple white flowers. Fruit (rose hips) red, not clustered. Native to eastern Asia, in China, Japan, and Korea.
